CAPRA - Capra
Release date May 22, 2020 (Bandcamp)
You think hardcore is dead? Dare you to play the new two-song set from Capra's self-titled release and then re-state that belief. Yeah, didn't think you could do it.
Firstly, the energy that emanates from this thing is monumental, the Louisiana-based unit grabbing you by the throat and simply forcing you to take notice. Secondly, Crow Lotus' vocals are some of the most intense and passionate I've heard from the sub-genre since Alle Hagman's (Raised Fist) breathless attack on the classic Watch Your Step and Ignoring The Guidelines releases. Harrowing to say the least.
The initial track, "Torture Ship", darts out of the gate with a speedy riff and Lotus' screaming admonishments, before oscillating between breakdowns, buildups and more speedy riffs ... an immediate and absolute classic. "Paper Tongues" follows with similar aggression, spite and instrumental prowess, sounding like Entombed-gone-hardcore to these ears.
There's only one thing to do after listening to this. Press play again.
